Open Access at Cambridge

Cambridge University Press supports all journals publishing models that are scalable and financially sustainable, and able to maintain both the highest quality and the stewardship of the authoritative Version of Record.

Under Cambridge Open, we are offering the following open access models:

We support both Gold and Green

Gold Open Access is supported via Cambridge Open and we are also listed as a ‘Green’ publisher in the SHERPA/RoMEO database of publishers’ copyright and self-archiving policies.

Green Open Access is covered by the vast majority of our standard Copyright forms which automatically allow our authors to archive their Accepted Manuscripts in institutional repositories, on personal webpages and in subject repositories such as PubMed Central.

The publication process

1. Only when an article is accepted for publication in a hybrid journal, is the author given the option to make the article Open Access (OA).* At this point the author should check with their research funder, library, or other funding body, to ensure that funds are available. Please note: The author should only tick the OA box if the funder has agreed to pay the APC.

*This ensures that the editorial decision is not influenced by the ability of the author to pay to publish the article as Open Access. Authors for the wholly OA journals are understood to know that their article, once accepted, will be published as OA.

2. The author completes the relevant forms: The copyright form or, the licence to publish, and the Open Access order form. The author can request an invoice to be sent to their funders, or can pay by credit card.

3. The invoice is raised and sent to whomever is designated by the author to receive it.

4. The article is published once payment is received.

We’re fully compliant

Cambridge complies with the requirements of the The Wellcome Trust, UKRC, HHMI, NIH and many other agencies. In addition the Cambridge Journals’ standard transfer of copyright agreement allows authors to place a copy of their Accepted Manuscript in a variety of places, including PMC. We allow the published Version Of Record to be made freely available under embargo of 12 months, post-publication, if the paper has not been published Open Access, and we offer authors the option to use CC licences on acceptance.
