In the volume 54, EAS Publications Series publish on “Oxygen in the Universe”.This book is the result of a collaboration between specialists of various areas ofastronomy to summarise what we understand of the production and distributionof oxygen in the Universe.

A large part is devoted to the methods of oxygenabundance determination in various media, as those are the fundaments on whichour knowledge is built. Why concentrate on oxygen? Oxygen is the most abundant of the metals, its abundance can be measured in many sites and with a variety of techniques, its formation process is now rather well understood: yet there are many unsolved questions. We believe that it is by showing the problems and facing them that progress is better made.

Following the thread of oxygen, the reader can gain a view of the Universe which is quite different from the perspective usually adopted in manuals, and therefore hopefully rewarding. We believe that this book is suitable for students, provided that they have sufficient background knowledge in astrophysics.

Just published: Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers

The proceeding books of the SWYA workshop are published in the European Astronomical Society, Publications Series, under the auspices of the European Astronomical Society and Astronomy and Astrophysics journal.

The Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers (SWYA) School is a 3-day seminar about the major aspects of scientific writing and publishing. The direct purpose of organising an "Astronomy and Astrophysics School" is to teach beginning PhD Students how to express their scientific results through adequate and efficient science writing. In other words: how to write scientific papers for different forums (journals, proceedings, thesis manuscripts, etc.).

What makes one scientist a good communicator and another a poor one? How to communicate scientific results through adequate and efficient scientific writing? How does the editorial process of a journal function, and why do scientific papers need to be refereed?

The contributions discuss all aspects of scientific publication, from the history and operations of A&A, its Editors' views of the peer-review and publishing processes, and the publication process as seen from the Publisher’s side. Two chapters written by the A&A language editors deal with the principles of effective scientific writing. The last two contributions focus on the use of library services and large database facilities in the context of astronomical research and publication.
