To find a particular table of contents, go to the journal homepage. You will find links to 'Current Issue' and 'Back Issues' (and to 'First View Articles', if they are available) in the 'Journal Menu' on the left-hand side of the page. Clicking on 'Current Issue' takes you to the table of contents for the most recent issue and clicking on 'Back Issues' takes you to a new page with links to all the back issues currently available on Cambridge Journals Online. Note: the journal homepage itself also gives you quick access to the contents of the current issue (and of First View articles, if available) from the buttons in the middle of the page. However, to access the features described below, you will need to go the actual table of contents page for each issue, by using the navigation in the 'Journal Menu'.
Tables of Contents
Each table of contents has the journal's title, subtitle and volume and issue number displayed at the top of the page. To the right of the journal title are buttons or icons which let you
- set up new contents alerts (see Help on Contents alerts)
- download a widget for this particular journal (see Help on Widgets)
- set up RSS or Atom feeds for this particular journal (see Help on RSS/Atom feeds)
View Table of Contents as PDF
Clicking the 'View Table of Contents list as PDF' button allows you to open the table of contents in PDF and/or save it to your desktop. The PDF opens in a new window and includes links to the journal homepage, the relevant volume and issue pages, and - by clicking on the bibliographical detail, shown in blue - to the abstract.
Forward TOC
This feature allows you to forward a table of contents to an interested colleague. To do so, you need to have registered and be logged in. See Help on Forward TOC.
Sorting tables of contents
The table of contents is arranged by article type and sorted by page number.
Use the 'Sort by' drop-down menu if you want to sort the contents in a different way. You can sort by page number, author, title, article type (eg research articles, book reviews) and published date.
Author and Keyword Index
Note: this feature is not yet available for all journals.
Click on the 'Author Index' link to bring up a list of authors who have contributed to this issue. If you have access to the full text of the journal you will see links to the abstract, PDF and HTML (if available) of their article next to their name. If you do not have access to the full text, you will see a link to the abstract.
Click on the 'Keyword Index' to bring up a list of keywords and links to the related articles.
Purchase this issue
Some journals are making individual issues available for purchase. If this is the case, you will see an 'Add this issue to your basket' link above the table of contents. Note: only the online version of the issue is available for purchase in this way.
View Selected Abstracts
To view the abstracts of selected articles check the boxes next to the ones you are interested in, then click 'View Selected Abstracts'. A new window will open displaying the abstracts you have chosen.
Save to My Saved Articles
To save an article to return to later, click the checkbox(es) next to the article(s) you are interested in, or select all by clicking the 'Select all' checkbox. Then click the 'Save to My Saved Articles' button at the top or bottom of the page. You can view your saved articles by going to 'Saved Articles' in your 'My CJO Links' menu. Note: you need have registered and logged in to use this feature. See Help on 'My Saved Articles'.
Export Citation(s)
To download citations to your desktop or email them to a colleague, click the checkbox(es) next to the article(s) you are interested in, or select all by clicking 'Select all'. Then click the 'Export Citation' button. See Help on 'Export Citation'.
Download PDF(s)
This feature allows you to download PDFs of articles to your desktop if you have access to the full text. If you do not have access to the full text you can use it to download abstracts. Again, click the checkbox next to the article(s) you are interested in, then click 'Download PDFs'. A new page or tab will open and you will be asked where you want the downloads saved and how you want to name them. Then click 'Start Download'. The PDFs will be downloaded in turn and you can stop the download at any point by clicking 'Stop Download'.
Add to Basket
If you don't have access to the full text of a journal, you can buy articles on a pay-per-view basis. To do this, either:
Click the checkbox next to the article(s) you are interested in, then click the 'Add to Basket' button at the top.
or
Click 'Add to Basket' beneath the article(s) you are interested in.
You will be then be taken to the Shopping Basket which will display the article(s) you have chosen. See Help on Shopping basket.
Accessing the articles
The following information is provided for each article:
title, author(s), title, volume, issue, circulation date, page number, DOI, the date it was published online.
If you do not have access to the full text of the article, beneath it you will see links to 'Preview', 'Abstract', 'Add to Basket' and, for some journals, 'Request Permissions' and 'Ask Your Librarian'. Clicking on 'Preview' will bring up a box containing the text of the abstract. See Help on Abstract, Shopping Basket, Request Permissions and Ask Your Librarian for more information about these other features.
If you, or your organisation, has subscribed you will see links to 'Preview', 'Abstract', 'PDF' and, where available, 'HTML' and 'Request Permissions'. Clicking on 'Preview' will bring up a box containing the abstract, with tabs to the 'HTML Article Structure (ie to the sub-headings that appear in the article) and to a list of the 'Figures and Tables' included in the article.
Note: to prevent abuse, Cambridge Journals Online users are allowed to view 1,000 pages from the site as a whole, of which 100 pages may be full-text article downloads, per IP address per hour. If you exceed this number of downloads, you will see a message to that effect asking you to resume activity in an hour.
As well as the standard 'Quick Search' and 'Cite Search' features available throughout the site, the drop-down search menu on a table of contents page allows you to restrict your quick search to that issue ('This issue'), or the journal ('This journal) or to related subject areas.
Search this Issue
From a table of contents, you can run a search across just that particular issue. Go to the first 'Quick Search'drop-down menu at the top left of the page and you will see that 'This Issue' has now been included in the list of options provided.
Left-hand menu
This panel is replicated throughout all Cambridge Journals Online's content-related pages. It contains links to: Society information and services(where relevant); detailed information about the journal (editorial board, instructions for contributors etc); the journal's current and back issues; access information and subscription prices.
Bookmark & Share This Journal
This feature allows you to bookmark or save details of this particular journal issue to a number of different social bookmarking or networking sites by simply clicking on the link to the site of your choice. See Help on 'Social bookmarking' for more information.
Tools
This menu allows you to download a CJO Widget for this particular journal (see Help on Widgets), download a Cambridge Journals Online toolbar to your browser or to add Cambridge Journals Online as a search option in your browser toolbar.
