What is the Hybrid Open Access Model, as employed by Cambridge Open?

Cambridge Open is our hybrid Open Access model, in which Open Access articles appear alongside non-Open Access articles in otherwise subscription-based journals. In contrast, within a fully Open Access journal all articles are free to access because the journal is supported by research grants or advertising income.

The hybrid model becomes possible because the author, or their funder, pays a fee to make the paper free to access. This fee is naturally subsidised by the subscription income of the journal, and may rise and fall in relation to this income.
