Question

What do you mean when you talk about 'Organisational users', 'Individual users' and 'Society members'?

Answer

Organisational users

Organisational users are those people who access the site via their library-held subscription. There is no need for you to deal with subscription numbers and all queries relating to access should be directed to your library's Account Administrator (usually the serials librarian, or the electronic resources manager). You can access tables of contents and article abstracts, perform searches, receive alerts and access the full text of articles for those journals to which your organisation holds an active subscription.

Individual users

Individual users are those people who have a personal online subscription to one or more journals. You need to register to receive full-text access. Individuals who have personal online subscriptions and are also affiliated to an organisation that has its own online subscriptions will have access rights to both their own and their organisation's subscriptions.

Society members

Society members are those members of participating societies who, via their society, receive the rights to full-text access for a particular journal. To gain access, you must register on the site and enter your Society ID and Society Subscription Number which will be provided by your society. Society members who have access to society journals and are also affiliated to an organisation that has its own online subscriptions will have access rights to both the society journals and their organisation's subscriptions (as well as to any individual subscriptions they may have).

Answer

Yes. All activated subscriptions will be carried over from the previous version of Cambridge Journals Online, so you do not need to take any further action. Answer

Click on 'Log in' at the top right hand side of the page, then click on 'Log into Cambridge Journals Online'. This will bring up a new panel. Click the 'Forgot your password?' link at the bottom. This will take you to the 'Forgotten Password' page where you can arrange either to have your password reminder or a temporary password emailed to you. This temporary password can be used to log in to your account. You will then be able to access the 'Update registration details' page and change the temporary password to a new one of your choosing.

Question

What is the role of the Account Administrator?

Answer

The Account Administrator is the person solely responsible for purchasing organisational subscriptions through Cambridge Journals Online and for managing online access. Where necessary, it is their responsibility to activate online access for the organisation's subscriptions.

Question

Who can be the Account Administrator?

Answer

Your organisation can appoint any registered user to be the Account Administrator. Usually, it is a member of the library staff. They will need to register with their own account username and password.

Question

What are valid IP formats?

Answer

IP addresses are made up of four numeric components separated by a full stop (period). Each numeric component ranges from 0 to 255. You can express an IP range by using a hyphen (-) and you can use a wildcard within a range by using an asterisk (*)

Examples of valid IP address formats (note the numbers are used as examples only):
  • 121.18.19.20 = a single IP address
  • 121.18.19.* = all IP addresses beginning 121.18.19
  • 121.18.19.0-255 = a range of IP addresses from 121.18.19.0 to 121.18.19.255 inclusive (ie the same as the example above)
  • 121.18.* = all IP addresses beginning 121.18
  • 121.18.0-255. = all IP addresses in the range 121.18.0-255 (ie all addresses beginning 121.18)
  • 121.18.0-255.0-255 = all IP addresses beginning 121.18
  • 121.* = all IP addresses beginning 121
  • 121.0-255.0-255.0-255 = all IP addresses beginning 121
    • We also support IP syntax CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) IP addresses, which use a single IP address to designate many unique IP addresses. A CIDR IP address looks like a normal IP address except that it ends with a slash followed by a number, called the IP network prefix. For example: 121.18.19.0/20

Question

What should I do after registration?

Answer

Once you have registered as the Account Administrator, you need to activate any new subscriptions to ensure your organisation has access to the full text of articles.

Please note, however, that subscriptions that had already been activated in the previous version of Cambridge Journals Online will automatically be carried over to the new site and do not need any further action. Please do not attempt to activate these. Only subscriber numbers that have not been activated before, or any new subscriber numbers, need any action taken.

Question

What is a subscriber number?

Answer

A subscriber number is the number you need to activate the online access to a subscription (individual and organisational). However, if you purchase your subscription through the Cambridge Journals Online shopping basket, your subscription will automatically be activated for you.

If you buy your subscription by any other means (via a subscription agent, or by phone, fax or mail from Cambridge University Press) you will need to activate your subscription in order to get access to the full text of the journal. If our Customer Services department has your email address they will email you the subscriber number; otherwise they will mail it to you. If you are subscribing to the print as well as the online version of the journal, you will also find your subscriber number on the carrier sheet in the journal package.

If your subscription originates from the UK, your subscriber number will be a 6 digit number used to identify you as a subscribing individual or organisation. In North America, the subscriber number is either an 8 or 9 digit number.

Question

How do I find out my subscriber number?

Answer

When you purchase a subscription, either direct from Cambridge or via a subscription agent, you will be sent your subscription number by email if we have your email address, if not, by post.

If you are receiving print versions of the journal, the subscriber number appears on the mailing sheet you get in the journal package. If your journal has been despatched from the UK, you will find the number just above your address. If your journal has been despatched from North America, you will find the number just below the barcode and just after the customer number. If you do not have any record of the number and you purchased the subscription via an agent, please contact the agent in the first instance. Click 'Configure IP address' in the 'Account Administrator Links' menu.

Question

How do I add or delete IP addresses?

Answer

To delete an existing IP address or range, check the 'Delete' box next to it.

Question

Are we allowed to have more than one Account Administrator for our organisation?

Answer

No, this version of Cambridge Journals Online only allows one Account Administrator for each organisation.

Question

I have activated the subscriber number/s, but there are still some of our subscriptions missing. Why is this?

Answer

Organisations can have more than one subscriber number. The subscriptions to your missing journals may be held under a different subscriber number. Please contact your agent or Customer Services for further help.

Question

The subscriber number/s has been activated, yet we are still being denied access to the full text of articles. Why?

Answer

Check that you have entered the number correctly. If the problem persists, please contact your regional Customer Services department for further help.

Question

Do I need to go through the activation process for every journal that we have subscribed to?

Answer

No, you only need to activate a subscriber number once in order for online access to be granted for all of the journals held against it. Once a subscriber number has been activated you will not need to enter it again. However, you will need to activate each subscriber number you have.

Question

What happens if we don't renew a journal subscription. Will we lose access completely?

Answer

You will still be able to access the back issues you previously purchased, but you will not be able to access any new content.

Question

I have activated our subscriptions but some of our users still cannot gain access. Why?

Answer

Make sure that all your IPs are correctly configured. Click 'Configure IP address' in the 'Account Administrator Links' menu. This will take you to the 'Configure IP address' page where you can check that all the IPs for your organisation have been entered correctly.

Question

Does Cambridge Journals Online allow institutional subscribers to provide material from the site to other libraries via interlibrary loan?

Answer

Institutional subscribers may supply another library within the same country with a part of the Material (by post, fax or secure electronic transmission, whereby the electronic file is deleted immediately after printing) for that other library to make a single paper copy of and to further provide to an Authorized User of the said other library for the purposes of research or private study but not for commercial use.

Question

Our organisation has a number of distance learners. How do they get access to our subscriptions?

Answer

Please ask your users to dial in to your library for access as they would normally do. As long as the user accesses Cambridge Journals Online from an IP address within your organisation's configured IP ranges, they will be able to receive organisational access. (Remember to abide by the Terms of Use when granting access to organisational users.)

Alternatively, Account Administrators can set up designated users to have remote access. Use the 'Remote User Access' page in the 'Account Administrator Links' menu.

Organisations that have registered their Athens ID with Cambridge Journals Online can give their library users a username and password that will allow them to access journal subscriptions remotely via Athens.

Question

Can I set up links direct to journal homepages and/or to individual articles or abstracts?

Answer

You can create a link to any journal homepage use the following formula:

http://journals.cambridge.org/journal_full name of journal with the spaces removed

For example, a deep link to The Journal of Agricultural Science would be:

http://journals.cambridge.org/journal_TheJournalofAgriculturalScience

To create a deep link to an article, you first need to find the article's DOI in the table of contents. For the deep link you need the number to the right of the back slash, including the S. For example, if the DOI of the article is 10.1017/S0142716405050095, you would use S0142716405050095.

To create a link to an article, cut and paste the number after:

www.journals.cambridge.org/article_

So, for the DOI above, that would be

www.journals.cambridge.org/article_S0142716405050095

To create a link to the abstract of your article, paste the number after: www.journals.cambridge.org/abstract_

Question

What is the role of a Society Administrator?

Question

I receive a free subscription to a journal as part of my society membership. Do I automatically have full-text access to this journal?

Answer

No. You will only receive full-text access if your society has arranged this with Cambridge Journals Online. If you have any queries please contact your society.

Question

What is a society subscription number? How do I activate it?

Answer

This is for members of a society only. If a society you belong to has made arrangements for its members to have access to its journal(s) on Cambridge Journals Online, you will need a society subscription number to 'activate your subscription' (ie to get access to the full-text of the journal(s) concerned). You also need to know your Society ID. Please contact your Society Administrator for this information. In case of difficulty, contact your regional Customer Services Department:

In the USA, Canada or Mexico

In the UK, Europe or the rest of the world

Email: journals@cambridge.org

To activate your society subscription, click on 'Activate Subscriptions' in the 'My CJO Links' menu. This will take you to a new page. Scroll down until you see 'Society Subscriptions'. Input the Society ID and Society Subscription Number and click the 'Activate' button. You will now have access to your society's journals.

Answer

For general guidelines on permissions, click here.

If you have a more specific query, please contact the journal's editorial team.

Question

I want to submit an article to a Cambridge Journal. How do I go about it?

Answer

Go to the journal's homepage. In the 'Journal Information' menu on the left-hand side of the page you will see a link to 'Instructions for Contributors'. This will give you all the information you need about who to contact and how to prepare your article for that particular journal.

More and more Cambridge Journals are encouraging online submissions. If the journal you are interested in is accepting submissions in this way, you will see a 'Submit your article online' button in the middle of the page. Click on this for more information.

Question

How do I create a link directly to my article either from my own website or my department's website?

Answer

To create a deep link to your article, you first need to go to the table of contents your article appears in on Cambridge Journals Online. Underneath the article title you will see its DOI. You need the number to the right of the back slash, including the S. For example, if the DOI of your article is 10.1017/S0142716405050095, you would use S0142716405050095.

To create a link to your article, cut and paste the number after: www.journals.cambridge.org/article_

So, for the DOI above, that would be www.journals.cambridge.org/article_S0142716405050095

To create a link to the abstract of your article, paste the number after: www.journals.cambridge.org/abstract_

Note: if you link directly to your article and the person following the link does not have access to the full text of the article they will see a message which explains why they are denied access. If you link to the abstract, users with full-text access will be able to click through to the PDF (or HTML where available) using the links at the top right of the abstract.

Question

How do I purchase a subscription (individual or organisational) online?

Answer

In order to purchase a subscription online you need to register with us. Please log in if you have already registered, or visit the Registration page if not. Individual subscriptions can be purchased by any registered user. Only the designated Account Administrator can purchase a subscription on behalf of an organisation.

Go to the homepage of the journal you are interested in and choose the type of subscription you would like to buy. Click the 'Subscribe' link and you will be taken to the Shopping Basket. Depending on the type of subscription you chose, it will appear in either the Individual or Organisational Shopping Basket. Once you are satisfied with the items in your shopping basket click 'Next'. Note: checking out of individual and organisational shopping baskets are two separate processes.

Individual shopping basket check-out

You will first be asked to confirm your name and shipping address. When you are ready, click 'Next'. The next page will display the exact tax payable on your print and online items. The total checkout amount will also be displayed. When you are happy to proceed, click 'Next'. You will now be asked to enter your credit card details. Depending on your country of origin, your credit cards will processed by WorldPay (United Kingdom) or VeriSign (United States). Note: We do not store any of your credit card information and only pass it to our payment facility partners.

Once your payment has been confirmed, an online receipt will be displayed. You can print this for your own records. The online items you have purchased will be displayed below with links back to their full-text content. You can view all your subscriptions by clicking the 'Subscribed to' link in the 'Browse Journals' panel.

Organisational shopping basket check-out

Depending on who you are, you may see a number of different screens at check-out.

If you are a registered user but the organisation you belong to does not have a Cambridge Journals Online account, you will be asked to set up a new account. After filling in the organisation details, click 'Next'. You will then proceed with the normal check-out from confirming name and address through to confirmed payment details. (Note: you will now be the Account Administrator for the organisation)

If you are a registered user belonging to an organisation that has a Cambridge Journals Online account (and you are not the Account Administrator), you will be asked to email the Account Administrator to purchase the organisational subscription for you. Fill in the message details, then click 'Next'. However, it may be that you want to buy a subscription for another organisation, one that does not already have an account. Click the 'create an organisation' link and you will be asked to set up a new account. Click 'Next' to take you through to the normal check-out steps.

If you are the Account Administrator for your organisation, you will go through the normal check-out steps from confirming name and address to confirmed payment details.

If purchasing a subscription on a public computer (in a library or office, for example), please quit the browser once you have finished your session. This is to protect your Cambridge Journals Online account and your credit card details.

Question

Is buying content on Cambridge Journals Online secure?

Question

When trying to purchase a subscription I am asked to set up a new account. Why?

Answer

The Account Administrator is the only person who can purchase on behalf of an organisation.

If you are a registered user belonging to an organistion that does not have an account with us, you will be asked to set up a new account in order to purchase the organisational subscription. By doing this, you will automatically become the Account Administrator for your organisation, with sole responsibility for purchasing subscriptions and managing user access.

Question

Why are some journals available at the organisational subscription rate only?

Answer

Pricing policy varies from journal to journal. Some journals have a single price for both organisational and individual subscriptions.

Question

How do I purchase a pay-per-view article online?

Answer

When you have found the article you want to buy (either from a search results listing or in a table of contents) click 'Add to Basket' under the article entry and you will be taken to the Shopping Basket. You can add more than one article at a time to your basket by clicking the checkboxes next to the articles that you would like to purchase, then clicking on the 'Add to basket' button at the top or bottom of the page.

All pay-per-view article items will appear in your 'Individual' Shopping Basket. Once you are happy with the items in your shopping basket, click 'Next'. You will first be asked to confirm your name and shipping address. The next page will display the exact tax payable, depending on the country you are based in.

The articles you have purchased will be displayed below with the links to the PDF and, where available, the full-text HTML.

You can view all your purchased pay-per-view articles by clicking the 'Pay-per-view articles' link in the 'My CJO Links’ menu.

Question

How long do I have to view an article once purchased?

Answer

Articles are available to download for 48 hours after purchasing.

Question

When does viewing of a pay-per-view article begin?

Answer

The article will be available for download immediately after purchase. A link to the article will be displayed as soon as the payment has been made. You can also view all your purchased pay-per-view articles in the 'Pay-per-view articles' link in the 'My CJO Links' menu.

Question

Can I save or print an article that I have purchased or rented?

Answer

If you have purchased an article and downloaded the PDF file, you are entitled to print off one copy for your own use. The PDF file may also be saved to disk for future use. If you have accessed an article via Article Rental, you can only read the article online and are not entitled to save or print it.

Question

What happens if I am unable to download the PDF file in the allotted time?

Answer

If you experience difficulty downloading a file, please contact the appropriate regional Customer Services department immediately:

In the USA, Canada or Mexico
In the UK, Europe or rest of world
  • The Edinburgh Building
  • Shaftesbury Road
  • Cambridge CB2 2RU
  • United Kingdom
  • Phone: +44 (0)1223 326070
  • Fax: +44 (0)1223 325150
  • Email: journals@cambridge.org

Question

I have purchased an individual and organisational rate subscription and two Shopping Baskets (Individual and Organisational) have appeared. Why?

Answer

The items will be split into two separate shopping baskets because the processes are slightly different if you are purchasing as an individual or on behalf of an organisation. Splitting them in two makes the process easier to follow and it also means that you can be charged/invoiced separately for individual and organisational items.

Question

Is there a maximum number of items I can purchase in one transaction?

Answer

Yes. 19 is the maximum number of items you can purchase in one transaction.

Question

Can I pay in Euros?

Answer

You can pay for a small number of Cambridge journals in Euros. Go to 'Subscribe to Journal' in the 'Subscription and Prices' menu on the left-hand side of the page. If the journal you are interested in has Euro prices they will displayed alongside the sterling and US dollar prices.

If you use our online shopping facility and are registered as living in a Euro country, the Euro price will automatically appear in your shopping basket when you click 'Subscribe'.

Question

Can I pay in my own currency?

Answer

If you reside in the USA, Canada or Mexico you will be charged in US Dollars. If you reside elsewhere, the charge will be made in Pounds Sterling.

Question

I live in Europe but would like the journal issues to be sent to an address in North America. Is this possible?

Answer

Yes, but because the delivery address is in North America (USA, Canada or Mexico) you will be charged in US Dollars rather than Pounds Sterling. If you reside in North America but would like the issues shipped elsewhere you will be charged in Pounds Sterling.

Question

I have a paid subscription but I cannot see the full text of articles. Why?

Answer

For organisational users, online access must be activated by the Account Administrator who will enter the relevant subscriber number. Please ensure that they have activated the subscriber number. Another possible reason for not receiving full-text access may be that your Account Administrator needs to include your IP address in their list of permitted IP addresses. Check with them that they have included your IP address.

In the case of individual subscribers and members of participating societies, you may need to activate your subscriber number yourself. Use the 'Activate Subscriptions' link in the 'My CJO Links' menu.

Question

How do I become an Account Administrator?

Answer

You need to register with Cambridge Journals Online. On the registration page, enter the name of your organisation in the appropriate input field. Then click the "I want to be the Account Administrator for my organisation" checkbox before going on to complete the rest of the form.

Once you have registered, you will be able to access all your Account Administrator functions in the left-hand navigation panel.

Question

I am having problems printing or downloading my PDF file. Any suggestions?

Answer

Here are some tips that may help with printing PDFs:

PDF files are very large and can take some time to download. The speed can depend on several factors - the bandwith of your network connection, the specifications of your computer and the amount of traffic on the internet. You must wait for the entire document to download before trying to print.

It may help to close other applications to free up memory space before trying to download a large PDF. You can also try printing one page at a time. Or try to save the file to disk rather than printing it immediately. Once you click a PDF link from the site, a download dialog box will appear. You have the option to download the PDF to your computer or open it with an Acrobat Reader in the internet browser.

Firefox users who have installed the Firefox PDF Download add-on should note that the add-on is incompatible with Cambridge Journals Online. To download a PDF, please disable the add-on or click on the "Bypass" button to view PDFs normally, or download the PDF using a different browser.

For more information about PDFs, visit the Adobe website.

Question

How are special characters displayed in HTML?

Answer

Our HTML content uses the Unicode Character Set to identify characters which are not part of the standard Latin character sets/symbols. We do this to extend the range of characters and symbols that can be displayed using an Internet Browser such as Explorer or Firefox. Many of our journals contain highly specialised content requiring character sets/symbols that are specifically for and unique to a subject area. However Internet Browsers and available fonts place limitations on the number of specialist characters that can be displayed correctly.

Support for Unicode depends on the type and version of the browser being used and the fonts installed on an individuals machine. These are configuration issues over which we have no control, so consequently the same article may display correctly for someone with a specialist font or latest browser but incorrectly for someone with a default font or older browser. In order to minimise this discrepancy we have defined a set of Unicode characters that display correctly in the browsers that CJO supports using the default font Arial (on a PC) and Ventura (on Mac), characters that are not in this set are replaced by images of the character or symbol. If this was not done, unsupported characters would display as an empty rectangle, not display at all or display the default behaviour for the browser being used. This has the advantage of enabling users to display the maximum number of unsupported characters. However, it also means that the level is set to a low threshold so users with specialist fonts that could view the special characters will still see the images rather than the Unicode character. There can also be mismatches in the style of the character if it should appear inside an word that is italic or bold. As browsers increase their support for Unicode we will be able to reduce the use of images in the HTML and we hope that this approach will enable you to get the most out of the HTML content.

More detail on operating systems and browsers requirements is available in our help files or please consult your browser information.

Question

What is the minimum number of commercial reprints I can order?

Answer

Our minimum order is 100

Question

Can I get a reprint of an article that is published online only, for example 'First View' articles?

Answer

Articles that are published online are deemed as published and like printed articles, are allocated a doi. These articles will be assigned and included in a print issue at a later date (with the exception of articles from online only journals), and this version of the article will include all details of the volume and issue.

How are articles reprinted?

Articles will be reproduced as they appear in print and in accordance with the high quality and standards of the print journal.

Can I have a cover on the reprint?

Articles can be printed with a customised colour cover (relating to the journal volume and issue it appeared) or with a title page including the Journal title, article title, author details, and journal logo for journals published on behalf of a society.

Can I add supplementary information to the reprint?

Reprints can be customised with additional typesetting such as product codes and disclaimers, and product information, logos and adverts subject to editorial approval.

How much do reprints cost?

The price of the reprint will vary depending on the number of pages, quantity required, the use of covers and whether the article contains colour. The inclusion of disclaimers, Product Information and other additional details may also effect the final cost.

How do I pay?

An invoice will be sent once the order has been confirmed and you are given 30 days to settle the invoice form the invoice date. Payment can be made by BACS, cheque or credit card. You must quote your 'JR' invoice number on all correspondence. Please ensure all financial information (such as purchase order number or separate invoice address) is provided when ordering the reprints.

How long will it take to receive my reprint order?

Orders take on average 2-3 weeks from order confirmation to delivery although this may vary depending on final quantity and delivery address.

Can my reprints be shrink-wrapped?

Yes they can at an extra cost.

Can I combine more than one article into one reprint?

We can combine a number of articles together with a customised cover if required, subject to editorial approval.

Can I order e-prints?

E-prints can be obtained. For options speak to the relevant representative.

Question

Why does a Skype phone icon appear next to ISSN numbers in my browser?

Answer

Your browser has a Skype plug-in which is enabled for click-to-call. This automatically detects any number in a phone number format and places the Skype click-to-call icon next to it. As ISSN numbers are in a similar format to phone numbers, these are picked up by Skype. To stop the Skype icon appearing in this way, you need to disable this function in your browser. You can find the Skype drop down in your browser by clicking the buttons next to the 'tools' drop-down. Once you've accesssed the menu, you can turn off the 'Turn number highlighting on' option. This will stop Skype highlighting the ISSNs on CJO as phone numbers.

Question

How do I claim for a missing print issue?

Answer

Please contact Cambridge Journals Customer Service using the information in the 'Contact Us' section of CJO, which you can find at the top of every page.

Claims for print issues not received should be made within 6 months of the date of publication, or upon receipt of the next issue, whichever is the sooner. Please note that, while every effort is made to maintain the advertised publication schedule, it may sometimes not be possible to despatch an issue in the month for which it had been advertised. No refunds of subscriptions will be made after the first issue of the year has been dispatched. In the event an issue has been made ‘out of print’ we will of course offer to make that publication available to the user through Cambridge Journals Online.

Question

How many months of data are available for the initial import?

Answer

The user can specify the range of dates for retrieving the reports. We have the reports as early as 2003.

Question

Which SUSHI release does CJO use?

Answer

The SUSHI version we are using is 1.6.

Question

What is the Hybrid Open Access Model, as employed by Cambridge Open?

Answer

Cambridge Open is our hybrid Open Access model, in which Open Access articles appear alongside non-Open Access articles in otherwise subscription-based journals. In contrast, within a fully Open Access journal all articles are free to access because the journal is supported by research grants or advertising income.

The hybrid model becomes possible because the author, or their funder, pays a fee to make the paper free to access. This fee is naturally subsidised by the subscription income of the journal, and may rise and fall in relation to this income.

Question

Which Humanities & Social Sciences journals are included in the Open Access initiative?

Answer

For the full list of HSS journals currently accepting Open Access articles, please click here.

All these titles are included in the new pricing structure. If the journal you are interested in is not on the list, please contact the editor, as other journals may be able to offer Cambridge Open Option. We will update the list regularly as more of our HSS journals join the initiative.

Question

Will the peer-review process be the same for Open Access and non-Open Access articles, and what are the safe-guards to ensure this?

Answer

Because you, the author, will make the decision about whether to publish your paper Open Access after it has been subject to peer review and has been accepted, Open Access will have no bearing on the peer review process.

Question

When do I (the author) have to decide to make my article Open Access?

Answer

You will be given this option after your paper is accepted and may make this decision at any time before instance of first publication.

Question

How will readers know which articles are Open Access?

Answer

In a journal's table of contents each Open Access article is clearly labeled as such. Readers need only click the link to gain full access.
