Response of bottom sediment stability after carp removal in a small lake

In this study, the loose and fluffy sediment layer in unvegetated regions that arouse from carp activities may be the main source for suspended sediments to deteriorate water quality in Lake Wingra. After more than half (51%) of carp was removed, the fluffy sediment layer became thinner or even disappeared, vegetation grew to deeper water, bottom sediments turned into more stable, and water became clearer.

Flow fluctuations had a strong influence on drifting invertebrate assemblage composition. In the wet season, fluctuating flows increased nocturnal drift density and richness, but decreased diurnal richness. In the dry season, fluctuating flows decreased drift densities and diurnal richness.

The upstream progression of seawater in the Shatt Al-Arab River due to dam construction and water diversion by riverine countries led to deterioration of water quality. Increased water salinity impacts inhabitants of Basrah, agricultural lands, and certainly has negative effects on freshwater diversity. There is a pressing need for freshwater release from upstream countries, and for the establishment of catchment-scale management plans.

Microcystins are potent cyanobacterial toxins which are commonly found in nutrient-polluted freshwater lakes. Our study provides experimental evidence of a relationship between nutrient release from sediments, growth of toxin-producing cyanobacteria, and elevated concentrations of microcystins.
